Who is a candidate?
Patients with healthy eyes and mild myopia. That means your prescription
for eyeglasses or contact lenses is between
-1.00 and -3.00 diopters, and you have no more than 1.00 diopter of
astigmatism.
What kind of results
can I expect?
In clinical studies (research) conducted in the United States, 74% of
patients receiving INTACS saw 20/20 or better after 12 months,
and 97% saw 20/40 or better after 12 months. (20/40 vision will pass
a driver's license test in most states). Of course, as with all surgical
procedures, individual results may vary.
How soon can I expect
to see improved vision?
Most patients can resume most activities within 1-2 days of the procedure.
The eyes tend to further stabilize over the next 4 to 6 weeks and in
some cases over a longer period. During this extended period usually
you can work, drive, and carry on with most daily activities.
Are there any risks?
With any surgical procedure, an element of risk exists, and uncommon
complications may occur. These include, but are not limited to; infection,
inflammation, difficulties with night vision, halos around lights at
night, ghosting, decrease in clarity, loss of best-corrected vision,
and fluctuating distance vision. Your surgeon will review the details
with you. Remember, with INTACS, if the results are not satisfactory,
the rings can be removed or replaced.
