Your first step is a complimentary personal consultation. During the screening, the doctor will determine if you are a candidate for one of our procedures. The consultation will also include an in-depth discussion with the doctor, who will review the risks and benefits of your procedure. If you are a candidate for refractive eye surgery, we will schedule a convenient date for your full pre-operative evaluation.
Before Your Surgery
A full pre-treatment examination is required before any surgical procedure. This examination takes approximately two hours and your eyes will be dilated, so you may want to have someone drive you home from your appointment. The examination will include testing visual acuity, eye muscle movements, peripheral vision, the retina, intraocular pressure, aberrometry, and other components of an eye exam. You will also be able to discuss your proposed surgery in depth with your doctor. If you decide to proceed with the surgery, we will schedule a surgery date and give you pre-surgical instructions. If you wear soft contact lenses, you must discontinue their use for at least two weeks prior to your evaluation and/or surgery. If you wear gas permeable lenses, discontinue their use for a minimum of four weeks.
The Day of Your Surgery
Someone should drive you to the procedure and drive you home. Although the surgery itself only takes a brief time, you will be at the surgery center for three to four hours to allow time for preparation and recovery. A short time before your surgery, you will be taken to the surgical suite where one of our staff members will monitor your vital signs and spend a few minutes reviewing what to expect. You will receive medication in the form of a pill to help you relax. Anesthetic eye drops will be used to numb your eyes, and the area around your eyes will be carefully cleaned and swabbed with an antiseptic solution. The surgery is brief; afterwards a Kremer doctor will examine you and we will review your post-op instructions.
Follow-up Care
Postoperative exams will be scheduled at a convenient Kremer location or with your regular eye doctor for an initial, one week, one month, three months, six month and 12 month visit. Your surgeon will review the details with you. Most patients see an immediate improvement in their vision and can resume normal activities within 1 to 2 days after surgery. We work with many local optometrists to provide you with the best post-operative care. Ask us if your eye doctor is a "Co-Managing" doctor with Kremer Laser Eye Center.
